Neudorf “Tiritiri”
NELSON, NEW ZEALAND | 2019
While the world often associates the finest Chardonnay with the old guard of Burgundy’s esteemed vineyards, New Zealand’s cool-climate appellation Nelson is a hidden treasure resting on the far northwestern coast of New Zealand’s South Island. I was lucky enough to spend a few days in Nelson during the 2019 harvest and was highly impressed with the quality of their wines and Neudorf Vineyards is truly one of the best representations for what to expect from this more obscure region.
Neudorf Vineyards is an emblem of quality and innovation in New Zealand winemaking standing as a testament to the dedication and vision of owners Tim and Judy Finn. Nestled in the picturesque Moutere Hills, the estate's journey began in the late '70s, evolving into a beacon of top-tier Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and giving Burgundy-lovers a run for their money.
The name "Tiritiri," derived from the Māori language meaning “to plant or cultivate”, reflects the essence of this exceptional wine. Grown in vineyards sitting next to the Tasman Bay, it reflects a sense of lightness, or a feeling of being part of the wind, capturing the essence of the vineyard's unique microclimate and the gentle maritime breeze that caresses the vines throughout the warmer days.
This inaugural attempt at Chardonnay encapsulates Neudorf's unwavering commitment to excellence. Crafted in the hilly, sun-kissed terrains of the South Island, this wine reflects the unique essence of the region. From meticulous hand harvesting to gentle pressing and partial fermentation in new French oak barrels, this Chardonnay exemplifies elegance and precision. An expressive Dijon-clone Chardonnay, it's a masterful tapestry of citrus, stone fruit, and a subtle touch of oak spice showcasing Neudorf's adeptness in harnessing the region's terroir while preserving acidity and fruit.
Adorned with critical acclaim, "Tiritiri" is built for those seeking a departure from the commonplace and promises an extraordinary tasting-voyage through Nelson's vinous landscape. While availability is limited, we were able to secure the last of this vintage for our Wine Club members and cannot wait for you to experience it.
Savor this exceptional Chardonnay with seared scallops, herb roasted chicken, or a creamy lobster pasta!
