Fattoria Coroncino “Il Coroncino”

Verdicchio dei castelli di jesi , Italy|  2018

It is our belief that Verdicchio could be Italy's most complex white grape varietal. Indigenous to the Marche region, it has been grown in the region since at least the 14th century. Looking back over 200 million years ago, today's vineyards were under water, and as a result, the soils are mineral rich with marine fossils. The modern history of Verdicchio began in the early 1980's, when sub-regions such as Castelli dei Jesi in the Ancona province began to gain notoriety in Italy, and soon abroad. By the 1990's many wine enthusiasts recognized that not only was Verdicchio a wine suited to drinking fresh, with many types of food, it could also age and gain in complexity.

Fattoria Coroncino is one of the legendary artisanal producers of Verdicchio. The winery was founded by Lucio and Fiorella Canestrari in 1981. The winery is located in Staffolo, in the heart of the Castelli dei Jesi zone. They own around 17 hectares of vineyards, and produce about 50,000 bottles a year, the majority of which is consumed locally in the the best restaurants of the region. Since its inception the family has practiced organic viticulture. It didn't take a trend for Lucio to understand that the best grapes come from deep-rooted, organically grown vines. Over 40 years later, and after Lucio’s passing a couple years ago, his son Vale continues to produce authentic Verdicchio.

"Il Coroncino" is produced entirely from Verdicchio, from two different vineyards, containing a high proportion of clay soil. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged on its lees for several months. This incredibly aromatic wine has notes of ripe melon, citrus peel, herbs, and bitter almond on the nose and the palate. This wine is NOT your cold fermented, overtly fruit and insipid style of Verdicchio. This is a bold, TEXTURAL, deeply mineral white wine that is incredibly complex. The food pairings are endless, from simple grilled fish to more savory pork dishes. A truly outstanding white wine.
