Poderi Aldo Conterno “Conca Tre Pile” Barbera d’Alba

Piedmont, Italy | 2019

Poderi Aldo Conterno is an iconic winemaking family that dates back to the late 19th century, but it was in the late 1960s that the Conterno family really put these wines on the international wine map with fruit coming from their highly venerated sites producing some of the most exquisite Barolos. Though it is Nebbiolo that most afficionados associate with Conternos highly allocated wines, they also shine with other varietals such as Barbera. Le Midi was able to procure a case this year for your enjoyment!

The hilly area of Bussia Soprana of Monforte d’Alba houses these 20-45 year old vines which have the perfect climactic conditions and bluish calcerous marls that create the most fantastic Barberas. These wines are full bodied but elegant and packed to the brim with ample red fruit, black plums while hinting at blood orange and herbs throughout. It is then followed by silky tannins and the inimitable elongated finishes Conterno wines are known for. This is not to be confused with the more rustic styles of Barbera that come from this region; this is a regal  beauty that drinks beautifully now but has plenty of room to evolve over the next few years. Truly a unique Barbera made by one of the most lauded Barolo producers in the world!

Conca Tre Pile is also a great way to try an affordable bottling from Conterno so you can experience the quality before investing in their knock-your-socks-off Barolos. If you decide to pair this with some food, I would recommend it to be served a bit chilled with a beet and goat cheese salad, or a braised brisket with a plum glaze.
