Domaine de Vernus “Régnié”
Beaujolais, France | 2019
New producer alert.
2019 marks the first vintage for Domaine de Vernus, a small domaine located in the village of Régnié-Durette in the Beaujolais region of France.
A partnership between Frédéric Jametton and Guillaume Rouget, the domaine was purchased by Jametton in 2017, after a career in insurance. He turned to one of the most iconic winemaking families of Burgundy with the goal of making complex and age worthy wines. Guillaume Rouget is the son of Emmanuel Rouget and the great nephew of Henri Jayer. If you are a Burgundy collector and fanatic, you will recognize these names, as they are amongst the most sought after and rare wines of the region. Guillaume has been making the wines at his family estate in Vosne-Romanée for several years. To say Vernus is in good winemaking hands is an understatement!
Domaine de Vernus owns 12 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are old-vines. Farming is organic, with an emphasis on biodiversity in the vineyards.
The winery is located in village of Lantignié. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with adjustable capacities, that allow for micro-vinifications of parcels, and ultimately more flexibility in the vinification process. The Vernus style follows along the lines of what you would expect from Rouget, with an emphasis on destemming as well as a cold maceration.
We were so impressed by the 2019 Régnié, that we knew you needed to try it. Pure Gamay, grown on granite, from vines with an average age of 40+ years.
Beautiful dark fruits, savory spice notes, and a silky mouthfeel. The wine has the delicacy that you want from Beaujolais but also a nod towards the complexity and richness of a Rouget wine. Dare we say it is Burgundian in style?
We’d pair this with Boeuf Bourguignon.
