Weingut Keller “Weissburgunder & Chardonnay”
Rheinhessen, germany | 2022
As many of you know, we're big fans of Klaus-Peter Keller’s wines, and for good reason. Currently operated by Klaus-Peter’s son Felix, many of Weingut Keller’s bottles are among the most coveted in the world. If you haven’t heard of their famous wine G-Max, I would highly recommend taking a quick dive to see the caliber of their wines.
While Keller’s single-vineyard Rieslings, with their incomparable quality and bogglingly high prices, brought them global acclaim, this month’s wine club selection is their Weissburgunder (aka: Pinot Blanc) and Chardonnay blend, offering the same exceptional quality at a friendlier price point. A little food for thought: many people think the direct translation of weissburgunder - white Burgundy - would correlate to Chardonnay, but is in fact Pinot Blanc (which is also an allowed albeit less popular varietal in Burgundy).
Based in Germany’s Rheinhessen, Keller’s wines are celebrated for the family’s deep understanding and painstaking approach to viticulture. Their wines, often referred to as the “Montrachets of Germany,” possess remarkable depth, finesse, and purity, and are the epitome of wines that are built to age. In this blend, Weissburgunder contributes freshness and elegance, while Chardonnay adds body and structure. These varietals flourish in Rheinhessen’s limestone-rich soils and create a beautifully balanced wine that lets the terroir shine through. Just a touch of oak was used for aging which lingers softly in the back allowing the fruits and earth to take center stage.
Though this wine shines now, feel free to let it rest for a few more years to understand its potential.
The 2022 vintage offers a lively interplay of crisp acidity and lush, rounded texture. Aromas of citrus zest, white peach, and a hint of minerality reflect the unique terroir, while green apple, ripe pear, and subtle almond notes add layers of complexity to the palate. This versatile wine pairs wonderfully with white-sauced pastas or cave-aged Gruyère.
