Vigneron Lulu

Côtes du jura, France |  2022

This bottle is a special addition to this month's selections, with only 3 cases available in Chicago, exclusively for our loyal wine club members. We hope you are as excited as we are in being able to experience them!

The Lulu Vigneron Chardonnay is a labor of love from the husband-wife winemaking team Ludwig Bindernagel and Nathalie Eigenschenck. Previously known as Les Chais du Vieux Bourg, the winery has recently undergone a rebranding to mark their successful conversion to 100% organic viticulture. Now operating under the affectionate name Lulu Vigneron—a nod to Ludwig’s nickname—the winery continues to produce wines that are highly regarded for their quality and limited production, all while embracing a more modern and simplified identity as is reflected in their minimalistic branding.

The terroir of their vineyards in the Jura valley is particularly special, featuring marly soils rich in fossilized oysters, which contribute to the distinctive minerality and salinity found in their wines. Ludwig’s approach to winemaking is deeply rooted in non-interventionism, reflecting one of Le Midi’s favorite motto’s “the wine is made in the vineyard.”  His dedication to organic practices, including hand pruning and the use of natural fermentations at low temperatures, results in wines of great concentration. Each vintage is painstakingly crafted with an annual production limited to no more than 1,800 bottles, ensuring that each bottle reflects the essence of the Jura terroir and the strict approval of its winemakers.

On the nose, there are subtle hints of almond and a distinct salinity that speaks to the unique soils of the region, however this is not an oxidative style usually associated with the Jura. The palate is layered with flavors of white peach, apricot, and aniseed, with a touch of menthol that adds a refreshing complexity. Despite its complex layers, the wine is remarkably balanced, with no overt oak influence, and it finishes with a clear, laser-focused cut that leaves a lasting impression.  Hold onto this bottle before opening for a few more years if you can, but if not, let it get some oxygen and relish in it next to an almond-crusted white fish lathered in butter, or your favorite buttered pasta with fresh herbs.
