For many of my readers, the word Jäger might conjure up not-so-fond memories of college dorms around a certain herbal liqueur, but rest assured, this wine has no affiliation! Instead, let’s talk about the grape behind this rosé. Zweigelt is a red grape variety originating from Austria developed in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt. It's a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent (gesundheit!), combining the best characteristics of both parent grapes to create wines that are fruity, vibrant, and versatile.

Weingut Jäger's Zweigelt Rosé is a delightful example of Austrian winemaking prowess. Nestled in the scenic hamlet of Weissenkirsch in the southern Wachau, this fifth-generation estate produces wines that capture the essence of their exceptional terroir. This rosé is a masterclass in balance and flavor, showcasing vibrant notes of red fruit intertwined with the mineral freshness of wet rocks with a lemon-driven acidity providing a zesty lift, while hints of vanilla and tobacco add depth, creating a creamy yet nimble texture. It finishes with a lip-smacking fruity glaze, making it difficult to have just one glass.

The vineyards of Weingut Jäger are sustainably farmed with vines running steeply along the contours of the Wachau for optimal sun exposure and drainage. The grapes, grown in the unique Gföhler Gneis soil (gesundheit again!), are picked at peak ripeness, contributing to the wine's complexity and roundness. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks preserves the pure fruit flavors and minerality making this wine a transparent representation of the Wachau's top vineyard sites. The winemaking process includes pressing the grapes with their stems and allowing a three-month fermentation period to bring out as much of the flavors and aromatics as possible.

The result is an exquisite and fun-filled rosé that perfectly embodies the philosophy of Weingut Jäger: less is more. Pair this gem with a fresh spinach and strawberry salad with crumbled goat cheese or pan-seared arctic char with caramelized onion and garlic, and you’ll have a match made in heaven.nberry, raspberry, and strawberry, intertwined with subtle hints of crushed gravel and umami. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and silky, showcasing a medley of red fruits supported by lively acidity. The mid-palate reveals layers of earth, rosemary, and sandalwood, adding to its complexity. Mild, well-integrated tannins lead to a tart, delightful finish, making this Pinot Noir an excellent pairing for dishes like chicken marsala or black truffle risotto.
