Domaine Pêcheur “Cuvée des Trois Cépages”

CÔtes du Jura, FRANCE |  2023

Going out to dinner in a hip Paris restaurant you are likely to encounter a wine list filled with the wines of the Jura region of France.

Located just over an hour south and east of the city of Beaune in Burgundy, the Jura shares some of the same classic varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Yet Jura also has indigenous varieties most notably Savagnin for white and the red varietals, Poulsard and Trousseau.

There are two main reasons why the popularity of the Jura has skyrocketed, not just in France, but globally. The natural wine movement is strongly attached to the Jura, with many producers farming organically, and working without additives. Secondly, with more and more drinkers looking for lower ABV wines, the Jura, and its classically cooler climate provide both whites and reds with great freshness.

This red from Domaine Pêcheur, is a textbook example of why Jura wines are so loved. Christian and Patricia Pêcheur founded their winery in the village of Darbonnay in 1976. Starting with just 1 hectare, they have grown over the years, but remain small. One of the secrets to success at this domaine is their vine age, with most vines between 35 and 50 years old, all of which are farmed according to organic principles.

We love this delicious red from Pêcheur simply called “Cuvée des Trois Cépages” because of its usage of three grape varieties: Poulsard, Pinot Noir, and Trousseau. Fermented with natural yeast, and aged in old Burgundian barrels for a year, without fining or filtering.

What a pretty wine with aromatics of high toned red berry fruit, crushed violets and earthy subtleties. The palate is silky, with soft tannins, and refreshing acidity on the finish.

This is the type of red that will go with so many food pairings, but a roasted chicken with a morel mushroom red wine sauce would be a match made in heaven!
