Bodegas Mitarte “Tatos”
RIOJA ALAVESA, SPAIN | 2016
Bodegas Mitarte "Tatos" is a rare and carefully crafted expression of old-vine Garnacha from the high-altitude vineyards of Rioja Alavesa. With fewer than 500 cases produced only in the best vintages, these individually numbered bottles showcase the balance of power and elegance that defines the region. The cooler temperatures and well-drained soils of Rioja Alavesa contribute to its signature freshness and complexity, while the region’s traditional low vine density allows each plant to develop deep concentration and character.
Bodegas Mitarte is a family-run winery established in 1982 by D. Santiago Gil Garcia whose family has been producing wines that reflect the heritage and terroir of Rioja Alavesa for many generations. The estate is comprised of 40 hectares of vineyards surrounding the town of Labastida, including 15 hectares of vines over 80 years old from where the ‘Tatos’ fruit comes. Winemaking takes place in both a historic 500-year-old stone cellar where whole-cluster fermentation occurs in used foudres, and aging takes place at the family’s state-of-the-art facility for ten months in 400-liter used French barrels, allowing it to develop structure and depth.
At almost a decade of aging in bottle, the wine is still very much alive and could use a light decant before tasting. Aromas of dried cherry and red currant are layered with subtle notes of strawberry liqueur, white flowers, and the local pink flower rock rose. Hints of white pepper, vanilla pod, and aromatic herbs add further complexity. The palate offers a full-bodied and well-balanced mouthfeel as the ripe fruit gives way to stone minerality and desiccated herbs. The tannins are smooth yet structured as they have evolved with time, with vibrant acidity enhancing the wine’s freshness. The finish is long and nuanced and can be paired with most roasted meats, aged cheeses, or simply enjoyed on its own!
