Bodet-Hérold “Physis” Extra-Brut

crémant de loire , france |  2019

When it comes to the wonderful world of sparkling wine, we can all agree that there’s no topping Champagne when it comes to quality, but this does not mean we shouldn’t pay attention to the magnificent sparkling wines from around the world that use the Champagne method to make their wines, and who can easily go head-to-head with some of the best Champagnes around. This new Loire producer is one that stood out as being extremely talented and one we should put on the radar for up-and-coming wineries to look out for.

Before getting into the wine itself, giving some background on the winery is imperative in understanding why the quality of the wine is as high as it is. If any of you were lucky enough to try some of the iconic Clos Rougeard that we poured for our one of our #yolo wine series, keep reading to see how this producer is directly affiliated with that iconic winery.

Etienne Bodet is a 5th generation winemaker who not only cut his teeth for many years producing exquisite wines in Champagne as well as working at famed Domaine Guiberteau, but is currently the estate director for Clos Rougeard being responsible for the vinification of the wines from 2021-2023. Etienne decided to leave the domaine at the end of this year to be 100% focused on his own project and alongside his wife Kim Bodet-Hérold who’s known for her exquisite palate and keen eye for quality. Having a duo of this caliber can only portend great things for the future and we’re so excited to be able to introduce his new venture to our customers!

Made from 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Grolleau, the grapes are all grown on the prized tuffeau soils of Saumur which creates tension, elegance, and precision in the resulting wines. The underground cellars also composed of tuffeau creates a perfect climate for wines being made for longevity. Having partnered with two organic producers, Bodet-Hérold have strategized where their selection of grapes best thrives and have therefore greater control over quality.

2019 is the 3rd vintage release of “Physis” after having spent 30 months on lees in the family cellars and an additional year in bottle! A wine made with this kind of patience and artistry could cost a small fortune in Champagne, but the price to quality ratio is greatly in the consumer’s favor for this one. Be on the lookout for more things to come from this young winemaker who is already burning white hot! Pair this wine with anything and everything, or nothing at all!
