Los Bermejos “Lanzarote Rosado”
Canary Islands , spain | 2022
The wine of the Canary Islands is amongst the most unique terroirs that we have in the wine world.
Los Bermejos is a producer in Lanzarote, the easternmost island of the eight total that compromise the group. Located about 80 miles off the coast of Africa, between Morocco and the Sahara Desert. For centuries, wheat was the main agricultural product of Lanzarote. That changed in 1730, when over the course of six years, the volcanic eruption of Lanzarote spewed lava and ash throughout the center of the island. After that period, local farmers figured out a way to plant vines in the ash. By digging a hole to pierce through the ash, and planting vines in the topsoil, viticulture began to flourish. Due to the high winds of the island, in addition to the protective nature of these holes, stone walls are laid around each vine to protect it. Looking at a picture of the vineyards of a producer such as Los Bermejos, you almost feel like you’ve landed on the moon!
This sub-tropical climate is harsh and challenging. With little rainfall and warm temperatures, native grapes are still able to thrive. The main red grape of Lanzarote is Listán Negro. This grape can be found in other parts of the world, such as California and Mexico, where it is known as the Mission grape, or Chile, where it takes on the name País.
Winemaker Ignacio Valdera, produces this delicious Rosado from Listán Negro. We think it is a great way to be introduced to the grape variety. It is made through direct press, fermented with natural yeast and aged in tank. 2022 was a vintage with severe drought, which led to less of this Rosado being produced. The quality thankfully is excellent, and we think the 2022 deserves to be part of your summer drinking. Notes of wild strawberry, citrus peel and spice can be found on the nose and palate. It finishes with soft structure and spice, making it an ideal Rosé to pair with grilled fish and summer salads.
