Thalvin-Graillot “Syrocco”

ZENATA, MOROCCO |  2020

At Le Midi and in the world of wine, our minds are often guided by the familiar names of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the like. Yet, wine lovers seeking adventure in their glasses have found an unexpected gem in Morocco, thanks in part to Alain Graillot's innovative spirit.

Alain Graillot, one of the most revered winemakers from the Northern Rhône, while biking through Morocco on holiday found multiple neglected Syrah vines that had strong potential and on the spot decided to bring his expertise to the sun-drenched vineyards of Morocco in collaboration with the Thalvin winery located in the arid and windy appellation of Zenata. Together, they've crafted the tantalizing "Syrocco," a wine that marries the best of both worlds. This intriguing old-bushvine Syrah showcases not only the potential of Morocco as a wine-producing region but also Graillot's audacious approach to winemaking.

In Morocco, Thalvin-Graillot benefits from a unique combination of elements. The vineyards experience warm, sunny days and refreshingly chilly nights, fostering the grapes' full ripening while preserving their vibrant acidity as Africa’s strong sirocco winds keep the vines cool. The label’s cuvée name is a playful mix of the famous wind’s name and the Syrah varietal. Situated at high altitudes, these vineyards absorb the essence of Morocco's terroir, creating a wine with a captivating sense of place.

As you uncork a bottle of "Syrocco," you're greeted with an aromatic journey through Morocco. The wine bursts with the rich flavors of blackberries and spices, with a subtle nod to the local terroir, and the inimitable mark of perfection brought by Alain himself. Fermented in concrete to preserve the essence of Marocco’s unique terroir, the wine is then moved over to Graillot’s most revered François-Frères Burgundy barrels for aging where the destemmed grapes spend 15 months aging before bottling. Each sip is a tribute to the harmonious blend of French winemaking tradition and Morocco's untapped viticultural potential.

Alain Graillot's collaboration with Thalvin has uncovered the allure of Morocco as an emerging wine destination, offering a new chapter in wine exploration. It's a nod to those who dare to venture off the beaten path, one glass at a time. Sadly there wasn’t a lot available to bring more in so in order to try it you’ll have to be a wine-club member this month! For pairing, if you are taking a more Mediterranean twist on Thanksgiving this year, try "Syrocco" with dishes like lamb tagine, hearty couscous, or Moroccan-spiced zucchini, and you'll embark on a sensory voyage to the bustling markets of Marrakech!
